Adara Lialios, virtual therapist in Chicago and all of Illinois specializing in anxiety, OCD and trauma

hi, I’m Adara.

And if you've somehow found yourself reading therapists’ bios on the internet (which, let's be honest, is probably because things have felt crappy for a while), welcome. I'm really glad you're here.

My guess is your brain doesn't exactly believe in “chilling out.”

Maybe you replay conversations on your drive home, trying to figure out “Wait, did that come out wrong?”

Maybe you need to know you're making the "perfect" decision before you can even start the first step.

Maybe anxiety has convinced you that if you beat that dead horse for just a liiiiittle longer, you'll finally feel certain.

Or maybe you're exhausted from trying to hold it all together while it feels like everyone else’s Instagram stories show that their lives are much easier.

If you're nodding along, first of all... rude of me to call you out this quickly.

Second, you're in good company.

I work with people whose minds are always on. The overthinkers. The perfectionists. The people who replay, analyze, prepare, predict, and go over every possible outcome before going forward. People who are incredibly capable, but whose brains rarely let them enjoy it.

Therapy with me isn't about "fixing" you.

Because I don't think you're broken.

Instead it may just be that  your brain has gotten really, really good at trying to protect you.

The problem is, things like anxiety, OCD, trauma response, and perfectionism aren't very good bodyguards. They're overprotective. They mean well... but they tend to tackle everyone and kick them out of the club before they've actually become a threat.

In therapy, we'll learn how to thank your brain for trying to help and then lovingly tell it, "I've got it from here."

Some sessions we'll laugh (I welcome your dark humor). Some sessions we'll sit with really hard emotions (I know that sounds yucky but sometimes we have to). Some sessions you can vent to me about the latest reality tv drama, but I absolutely WILL find a way to relate it back to the drama in your life we are trying to avoid.

My style

I'm not the therapist who's going to nod silently for 50 minutes while you do all the talking.

I'm curious. I'll ask questions. I may pick up on patterns you haven't noticed yet. I'll celebrate your wins (even the tiny ones that don't feel exciting yet), and I'll challenge you (lovingly of course) if you need a call out.

I use evidence based approaches like Exposure and Response Therapy (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness. I know I am trying to get fancy here with the acronyms, but these are all ways to say we are gonna dig deep and learn the tools to back it up.

My hope is that you leave sessions feeling understood, challenged, and maybe laughing at least once or twice.

A little about me

Outside of therapy, I'm a musician, a traveler, a recovering people pleaser, and just a girl.

I'm also an eldest daughter of a “big fat Greek family”... and to add an additional layer, I’m now a long distance eldest daughter.

If you know, you know.

Let's just say I have a soft spot for the caretakers, the over functioners, and the people who feel responsible for everyone else's emotions.

I've also learned firsthand what it feels like to be flirting with rock bottom and have to pull things back together again. I hope to be able to help you along your similar journey as well.
